Whew... the weekend is over

This was one of those weekends where you wonder how in the world you can ever possibly accomplish everything.

Since it is now Monday, you know we survived.

Friday night:

6:00 PM-8:00 PM went to the fairgrounds to assist in float building for Kaelin's mini tee-ball team.

8:30 PM- 12:30 AM made little signs for the tee-ball float

Saturday:

7:30 AM- met at the fairgrounds to get ready for the little league parade

9:00 AM- 10:30 AM- little league parade

11:30-2:30 - Kaelin's friend, Hope's, birthday party at a horse ranch

3:00-5:00 - a wedding reception for our friend Marla

5:45 - 6:45 - back to the little league park for little league pictures

Sunday:

We just rested, went to the park, and cleaned the house.

Kaelin is on the Aggies tee-ball team. Uncle Truman is just loving that. Everything we do revolves around either the color maroon or a big thumb.

This was our float. Those little white balls with the kids names on them cost me a pretty late Friday night.

Mini tee-ball Aggie's team (Kaelin is one of two girls)

Wardrobe change... then off to Hope's birthday party at the horse ranch. Kaelin found what she thought should have been a stage, so she took full advantage of it and began performing a concert for the birthday party. (Glad she is not shy).

Kaelin (sitting so lady like) and her sweet friend, Hope.

Although that was not the end of our day, that was the last event I took pictures of. We still had the wedding shower and then another wardrobe change (in the truck) and back to the little league park.

We had a great time, but I think we were all in bed by about 8:30 Saturday night.

Carnival Time

WOW... where did Spring Break go????

I feel like I have had a week of very minimal accomplishments. I hate that feeling.

We did spend an entire day at the Houston Livestock show carnival. We got there around 11:30 AM and left around 8:30 PM. We were some heavy duty carnival animals.

This was probably the FAVORITE ride. They loved the slide. In fact, we spent nearly as many tickets on the slide as we did on the assortment of carnival food.

The bubble fun house rocked.... except Kaelin got lost and finally got a sweet little girl to help her find her way out.

I am a little freaked out by the paintings in the background, but the inside of the fun house was okay.

We met some of our friends (Lisa, Terry, Addison, and Bryson) there and proceeded to eat and ride everything in site. I think we all had belly aches the next day.

This is a quick run down on the carnival food we devoured:
corn dogs
lemonade
strawberry lemonade
funnel cakes
cotton candy
hot dog
corn on the cob
french fry loaf
ceviche (yes at the carnival)
hamburger
popcorn
peanuts
probably other things that I am mentally blocking out.

Here is a list of things at the carnival that we DID NOT eat:
fried Snickers (have tried them and don't like them)
fried Oreos
fried butter (why???)
chicken fried bacon
turkey legs
sausage on a stick
fried pickles (love them)
anything else that could possibly go into a deep fryer
any type of animal that moved at one time (seriously, they will grill, smoke, or fry anything)

The weather was absolutely phenomenal (which was a nice surprise from the dismal winter we have had). We all actually came home with some minor sunburns. It felt nice.

Running Stories

Since it is spring, all we really do is run. (Part of the reason I am so slow at posting anything new). Last weekend, we spent the entire weekend running. For the 3rd year in a row, we ran the Texas Independent Relay. This race is actually one of my favorites because of the nature of it. It involves a 12 person team, 2 vans, 2 or 3 drivers and 203 miles run over two days.

(My insanity is probably shining through because I actually chalked this race up to quality fun.)

Kaelin has gone with me all three years and she just loves it. She always waits a block away from where I hand off to the next runner and she runs the last part of the race with me. It makes her feel so important because everyone is cheering for her. (You know the spot light is not something she has ever run away from).

After spending the weekend with 12 runners (some of them are WAY more serious and dedicated than I am), I noticed that runners have different conversations than most people. Here are some examples (WARNING... some of these things might seem gross to the non-runners, but all of the runners will totally relate):

1. Let me just get a gross one out of the way... Toenails... every runner knows what I am referring to when I talk about losing a toenail. The constant pounding on the pavement causes a blister to form under your toenail and the toenail turns black, then comes off. (Yuck... gross...) It is really not as bad as it sounds. In fact, it does not hurt that bad. I have lost toenails on 4 toes this year. One of the toes, I damaged the same toe nail again. So, how do you fix that... (warning... another gross part)... you have to take a pin and drill it into the toe nail to relieve the pressure (and the other nasty stuff in it). Prevention... I have tried new shoes, bigger shoes, different socks, taping toe bandages around each toe... nothing really makes a difference.

2. Distance... one of my favorite things that people ask or tell me... I love it when people ask me how long the marathon is that I am running. Really people... a marathon is 26.2 miles and a half marathon is 13.1 miles. That never changes. There is actually Greek history that goes along with that distance and the name marathon. I also love it when someone tells me they are going to run in a marathon over the weekend. I ask where and say I did not know you were a runner. They proceed to tell me they signed up for it last week have run a couple of times this week. The more I prod... they are running/walking in a 5K. There is a slight difference of 23.2 miles between a marathon and a 5K. But you are off to a good start.

3. Fanny packs vs. running belts... Never refer to what a runner is wearing as a fanny pack. That is something Chinese tourists wear. We wear running belts. They are WAY cooler than a fanny pack. Some running belts hold water bottles, little pockets for money, chapstick, etc. But they are never called fanny packs.

4. Injury... It is not "if you get hurt" it is "when you get hurt". It happens... Runners can listen to any other runner complain about a pain and give an immediate diagnosis and treatment. If your knee is hurting above the knee cap, probably the illiotibial band (but don't call it that, call it the IT band)... take it easy and ice your knee after every run. Your upper thigh hurts, hamstring.... you don't stretch enough before or after running. So, don't waste your time and money going to doctors for aches and pains, just talk to your neighborhood runners. They will fix you right up.

5. Running watch.... I do own some very nice watches, but refuse to wear them. I love my running watch. When I am dressing up, I wear my black running watch, when I am going casual, I wear my light purple running watch. Yes, I really did wear my running watch to a formal wedding (my dress was black and so was my watch, so at least I matched).

6. Bodily functions... another great gross topic... We got into a conversation about the "art of blowing your nose while running". You know if there was a gross conversation going on, I was right in the middle of it. Here is the art... since you don't have Kleenex with you (because if you did, they would be drenched in sweat), you have to blow your nose as you run. To get the technique correct, you have to bend your head at a certain angle, hold one nostril down and blow with lots of force. The correct angle keeps it from going all over your face (so I was informed). As a courtesy to other runners, you need to make sure no one is behind you because they might get a little upset.

Enough running stories for now, but don't worry, I have lots more to share and enlighten you with.

Update on Kaelin

Kaelin is doing great. Fever is gone and she is back 110%.

Last week, Todd stayed home with her on Monday and Wednesday. I stayed home on Tuesday. She went to Lisa's Thursday and by Friday she was back to school but still tired.

At this time last week, she was hitting temperatures that were nearly 104. We thought she had the same little virus that some of her friends had, but she was declining quickly. Her fever kept getting higher, she kept thinking she was going to throw up. She went two days with eating NOTHING (I don't think I have ever done that).

Finally, last Wednesday, we ended up at the doctor's office. He initially said, "Well it is probably a virus that will just have to run its course, we are seeing a lot of those these days". But luckily he was listening to us and said the only thing that was concerning to him was that her stomach was bother her so much. He order a urine test.

The Urine Test...
Who would have thought going to the bathroom in a little cup would turn out to be so traumatic. Kaelin is still talking about the time she went tee tee in a little cup. The nurse bribed her with ice cream. We gave her water. Finally it took her dad talking to her on the phone and letting her know she needed to do what the doctor was asking.

Low and behold.... all of the sudden she had to go to the bathroom and she went in the little cup.

The Results...
Kaelin had a kidney infection. The doctor did not know what caused it and nothing else seemed out of check. But she will still go back in 10 days for a follow up visit. She started taking the antibiotic and in about a day and a half, the fever began dropping and her energy began rising. She got her appetite back over the weekend.

Now she is more than 110%. Feeling great, talking constantly, eating normally, and being incredibly sassy.
